Frequently Asked Questions

What is Traditional Thai Massage? We do your yoga for you - and so much more!

Thai Massage, or Nuad Bo-Rarn, is a full-body massage performed on a mat on the floor with both parties wearing loose, comfortable clothes. A blending of elements, yogic stretching, fascial stretch therapy, acupressure, t'ai chi, breathwork and meditation, and incorporates traditional Thai medicine. The practitioner uses their hands, feet, arms and legs to guide the recipient into various yoga postures. By applying deep and sustained pressure, the muscle's connective tissue, or myofascial, softens and relaxes, allowing the energy to flow freely along the sen lines, ultimately preparing the client for the following large-scale stretches.

At Bahn Thai Spa, our team comprises a diverse group of skilled Practitioners with backgrounds in various disciplines such as dance, CrossFit, Muay Thai boxing, and Triathlon. This extensive range of expertise enables our practitioners to effectively cater to the unique needs of our clients, regardless of their fitness level.

The benefits of Thai Massage are numerous for not only maintaining good health but also treating a broad spectrum of health concerns:

  • increases flexibility and range of movement
  • eliminates muscle pain and muscle spasms
  • allows for a significant release of deep, emotional distress
  • stimulates blood circulation and lymph drainage
  • stimulates internal organs
  • relieves fatigue, swollen limbs, painful joints, and headaches
  • improves postural alignment, calms the nervous system, and promotes a deep sense of relaxation

What's the difference between RMT and Practitioners (non-RMT)?

At Bahn Thai Spa, we offer both Registered Massage Therapists (RMTs) and Licensed Holistic Practitioners to cater to different needs and budgets. RMTs have extensive training in various massage modalities, including Traditional Thai Massage, which is the service they offer here and is available for individuals with health benefits. Our Practitioners, including highly skilled Seniors, Practitioners, Apprentices, and Students, are licensed by the City of Toronto and are members of a Holistic Practice Association. They have varying experience and training, ensuring you receive the highest quality care during your Thai Massage session.

For a deeper understanding of our team, we encourage you to explore our dedicated page, offering comprehensive information about our esteemed team members.

Can Thai Massage be covered by my Healthcare Provider?

Absolutely! Thai massage is a rapidly growing form of massage therapy in North America, and you can include it in your coverage. Our team of Registered Massage Therapists (RMTs) are extensively trained in Traditional Thai massage. To ensure you can claim this through your health insurance, make sure to request an appointment with an RMT at the time of booking, and we'll provide the necessary receipt.

*Please keep in mind that we do not offer direct billing. And if you need a receipt reissued, a nominal fee of $25 will apply.

What if I have a Health Spending Account (HSA) with my company?

A growing number of companies are recognizing the overall benefits of offering a “Wellness Spending Account,” which allows the employee to pay for yoga classes and personal trainers. It’s always best to check, but as we say, we “do your yoga for you,” so even a service with our non-RMTs might be covered. Please check with your individual insurance company.

Do you accept walk-ins, or should I book the appointment?

Is it advisable for the elderly or people with disabilities?

Thai massage is highly advisable for the elderly and individuals dealing with disabilities. It can be incredibly beneficial and is often precisely what they need. As people age, their health may decline due to reduced mobility. Thai massage, with its focus on taking muscles and joints through their optimal range of motion, can play a vital role in addressing this issue.

Thai massage is sometimes referred to as "yoga massage" or "assisted yoga" for a reason—it allows clients to experience the benefits of yoga, such as improved flexibility, joint mobility, and deep relaxation, without having to actively perform yoga poses. The passive movement into yoga-like positions helps open up tight joints and muscles, providing a profound and liberating experience, especially for older people. It can contribute significantly to their overall well-being and quality of life. At Bahn Thai Spa, we ensure that our massage sessions are tailored to meet every individual's unique needs and requirements, including the elderly and those with varying abilities.

Is Thai massage painful?

Thai massage should never be painful unless the therapist is inexperienced or poorly educated. The therapist might be out of tune with the receiver and inadvertently push beyond the client’s comfort zone. That being said, we often hear, "ahhh, that hurt SO GOOD!"

Thai massage should be blissful for the receiver. Practiced with mindful intention to do no harm, it deftly encourages clients to their edge of flexibility but never beyond. It respects the body’s limits. Each client, therefore, has the same experience of having a good stretch, regardless of whether they are relatively stiff or relatively open. The rocking, rhythmic quality of Thai massage and its gentle movements are experienced as both comforting and liberating.

Is Thai massage good for pregnancy?

Thai massage is a safe and beneficial option for both prenatal and postnatal periods. However, it's essential to inform us in advance so we can schedule your appointment with a staff member specifically trained for prenatal massage. The advantages of Thai massage during pregnancy stem from the enhanced blood circulation and oxygen supply to the tissues. This can help alleviate common pregnancy discomforts like fatigue, back pain, sciatica, edema, constipation, headaches, varicose veins, and muscle cramps. Moreover, the improved circulation aids in better nutrient flow and waste removal for both the mother and the baby. Your comfort and well-being are our priority.

I have allergies. What kind of ingredients are used in the oil massage and hot stem?

We know that allergies are becoming an increasing concern for many people. We use only the finest organic coconut oils, lotions and essential oils, including our signature Lemongrass oil, which is available for purchase in our Gift Shop. Our hot stems (Luk Pra Kob) are filled with dried herbs.
